Products affected

The KayserBetten Safe Surround Genie Bed is designed for children and adults who need extra protection because they can move into unsafe positions during the night (Figure 1 and Table 1).

The manufacturer has identified that the hand control may not remain locked after use. If the hand control is not locked while a patient is unattended, unintended movement of the bed may occur, which could result in entrapment and serious injury or death.

Advice for consumers and caregivers

If you have this bed

  1. Contact Medifab straight away by freephone on 0800 543 343 or send a scanned copy or photo of the bed by email to solutions@medifab.com
  2. Please provide the following information to Medifab:
    • the bed serial number
    • location of the bed (the physical address)
    • a contact person’s details (name, phone number and/or email address).
  3. Medifab will contact you to book a free appointment for a service person to replace the hand control.
  4. Please make sure the bed is available and not in use at the appointment time. The Medifab service person will fit the new, safer hand control, test that it works, and show you how to use it.
  5. The service person will record the details of the visit and ask you to confirm the replacement is complete. They will take the old hand control away for safe disposal – you do not need to do anything with it.
  6. If the bed has been sold, transferred to another user, returned, or is no longer in use, please advise Medifab and pass this information on to the current user where possible.

Where to locate the serial number

  • The serial number is printed on a label attached to the end of the bed frame.
  • Look for the serial number symbol, SN in a box, as shown below.
  • The number next to this symbol is your bed's serial number.
  • Please ensure nobody is in the bed before you look for the label.

Interim safety measures

Follow these interim safety measures until the new Auto-Lock hand control is fitted, and whenever the patient is unattended.

  • Ensure the sleeping platform is in a level position and its lowest height when the patient is unattended.
  • Lock all hand control functions using the key.
  • Close the bed doors.

Ensure family members, caregivers, and anyone else who may operate the bed are aware of these interim safety measures.

Information for healthcare professionals

If you or your organisation has provided or managed the supply of an affected bed:

  • identify the bed's current location and user
  • give this notice to the user and their caregivers, and notify Medifab that you have done so.

Regulator action

Medsafe is working with the device supplier, Medifab, regarding this corrective action.

Medifab will also be contacting known users to arrange for affected hand controls to be replaced.
