Melatonin without a prescription

This page supersedes "Reclassification of Melatonin" published on 24 June 2019.

The classification of melatonin was changed on 18 June 2025 to enable supply of melatonin without a prescription. This change enables supply of approved melatonin containing medicines at pharmacy without needing a consultation from a doctor or pharmacist. Companies can make applications for approval of medicines that contain enough melatonin for consumers to use for up to 10 days for jetlag, and for up to 30 days for insomnia.

This change is in addition to the existing classification that allows for supply of a larger pack by a pharmacist to adults 55 and over, for up to 13 weeks supply. Melatonin containing medicines are also available on prescription.

Those intending to import a supply of unapproved melatonin for personal use will still need a prescription to do so. Medsafe advises caution when importing unapproved medicines and products from overseas, due to the risk of these medicines being of poor quality, variable potency, contaminated or containing undisclosed ingredients.

Pharmac decides what medicines to fund in New Zealand, Melatonin is not a funded medicine for most people.

For companies intending on making an application for approval, refer to the guidance here, and contact medsafeapplications@health.govt.nz with any questions.
