Prescriber Update 33(3): 28-29
September 2012

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently updated its recommendations on the management of patients implanted with metal-on-metal hip replacements. Medsafe and the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association endorse the MHRA recommendations for patients in New Zealand.

The new recommendations apply to symptomatic patients with either hip resurfacing implants or stemmed metal-on-metal hip replacements with femoral heads of less than 36mm. It is now recommended these patients are to be followed up annually for the life of the implant.
